High Body FAT prevents Death

Journal of the American Medical Assoc. (AMA) found that being overweight lowered your risk of dying from any cause by 6%.. 97 separate studies involving 3 million adults researched by CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) found that having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 29.9 (considered overweight) may expand your life span.  Overweight people with diabetes seems to fare better than thin people according to Mayo Clinic Proceedings  Normal and underweight heart disease patients, with lover % of body fat were more than 4X as likely to die (within 3 yrs) than overweight patients.  Reasons: hormones released by fat can have anti-inflammatory properties that fight disease, and fat tissues provide greater energy reserves that aid in recovery. “When your sick, your body may require more energy to heal properly” says CDC Scientist Brian Kit, MD. He stated “to some extent, extra fat can provide a crucial boost so you can bounce back faster”.  Obese people with hypertension are prescribed medication more than thin people.  The American Journal of Cardiology theorizes that doctors are more likely to aggressively treat heavier patients because of visible risks for deadly disease. On the flip side, bias may delay medical care for thinner people.  Also heavier people are more likely to be on prescription drugs for chronic ailments, thereby increasing their longevity.           (excerpts taken from article written by Melinda Wenner Moyer)
